A Palestinian police officer, armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, waves from a civilian bus after arriving in the Gaza Strip from Egypt Wednesday. He and other Palestinian police officers took control of the town of Deir al-Balah, the first town in the Gaza Strip to taste freedom under the PLO-Israeli autonomy accord. Thousands of joyous residents overran an Israeli army base to hug Palestinian officers and clamber over the guard towers and other hated symbols of the Israeli occupation of the area. Israel's Cabinet Wednesday unanimously approved the Israeli-PLO accord and a timetable for withdrawal that will take Israeli troops out of the Gaza Strip and West Bank town of Jericho by May 18. Parliament also was expected to approve the accord Wednesday.
