RED BUTTE TRAIL CLOSED TO MOUNTAIN BIKERS

SHARE RED BUTTE TRAIL CLOSED TO MOUNTAIN BIKERS

Concerned about a "research natural area" in Red Butte Canyon, the U.S. Forest Service is closing the Red Butte Skyline Nature trail to mountain bikes - much to the dismay, naturally, of mountain bikers.

The two-mile trail, which skirts the south portion of Red Butte Garden and dissects the west portion of the canyon's natural area, has been popular with hikers for generations. Most recently, it has been discovered by mountain bikers, whose numbers reach up to 500 on weekends.

But those bikers are threatening the natural area, which is one of the few remaining undisturbed watersheds in the Great Basin.
