SHARE LEASING FIRM HONORED BY S.L. CHAMBER

Chris Matthews & Associates, a fee management and leasing firm managing a portfolio of 1 million square feet of office, industrial and retail space, was honored Wednesday with the Small-Business of the Year Award from the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Verl Topham, chairman of the chamber's board of governors and Utah Power president, and E. Rod Ross, president of Equitable Life and Casualty, sponsor of the award, gave an engraved jade obelisk to Chris Matthews, company president.The company will be honored Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. during a two-hour reception in Equitable's office at 3 Triad Center.

Formed in December 1990 with one employee, Chris Matthews & Associates now has 80 employees, including 45 part- and full-time employees who do cleaning and janitorial work. The company made $9,000 in 1990 and that has grown to $1.2 million.

The company's clients include Travelers Insurance, Teachers Annuity and Insurance Fund of New York, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Bonneville International Corp. It also manages 565,000 square feet in the Triad Center and in the last 18 months has gone from 54 percent to 90 percent occupancy.
