SHARE BYU DEPARTMENT CHIEF IS NAMED BYU-HAWAII V.P.

The chairman of the civil engineering department at Brigham Young University will become the new academic vice president of BYU-Hawaii.

Olani Durrant will succeed Eric B. Shumway July 1, when Shumway takes over as president of BYU-Hawaii. Joint announcement of the position came from Shumway and BYU President Rex Lee.Durrant, who was born in Honolulu and grew up in American Fork, has worked at BYU for more than 28 years. He began as a civil engineering instructor in 1963 and later became a professor of civil engineering in 1970. In 1982 he became the associate dean of engineering and technology. He remained in this position until 1992, when he became department chairman.

Durrant received his bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from BYU and earned a doctorate of science in structural mechanics from New Mexico State University.
