Mildred Horton, who has served in many PTA leadership positions, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the board of directors of Murray Board of Education.
She is currently serving on the Utah State PTA Board as a regional director. She was also appointed this year by Murray Mayor Lynn Pett to serve on the new Murray Youth Community Action Group working on the education and employment committees.Horton was one of 18 people from Murray's Precinct 1, covering the northwest part of the city. Recommendations were received from the community groups of the Horizon and Viewmont elementary schools and others in the area. All those who were interested in applying were interviewed by the school board.
She served as PTA president of the Murray Council PTA and both the Riverview Junior High and Murray High PTA organizations.
The new board member was chiefly responsible for the creation of the Murray Coalition for Youth, which led to Murray/-America 2000. She served on the steering committee of that organization.
Horton has earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Washington State University.
She and her husband, Ralph Maurice Horton, have lived in Murray for 13 years. They have six children and seven grandchildren.
