Nothing will please Mom more this Mother's Day than a personalized gift from the heart. This year, surprise Mom with your own version of a "thought for the day" calendar filled with pictures, poems, recipes, inspirational quotes and whimsical thoughts to last all week long. Since Mother's Day is just around the corner (Sunday, May 8), you and your child/grandchild will want to get an early start making this thoughtful remembrance.

To make the "Special Thoughts for Mom" calendar for a week you'll need:- 8 3-by-5-inch plain index cards

- 2 metal rings (available at stationery stores)

- Hole punch

- Markers, pens, crayons

Punch two holes, evenly spaced, a half inch from the top of each card. Be sure the holes line up when the cards are stacked together.

Print a day of the week, Sunday through Saturday, at the top of each of seven cards. Under each day, create an original idea to brighten Mom's day. Decorate the remaining card for the top of the collection and print a title on it such as "Special Thoughts for Mom" or "A Bundle of Love for Mom." Attach the cards together with the metal rings.

Here are some ideas for the daily cards:

- Choose a photo of the child as a newborn baby with Mom. Attach it to a card with the words, "My love for you will last a lifetime."

- Spell Mom's name vertically on the card. Write an affirming word describing Mom beginning with each letter. An example:

K-Kind

A-Awesome

T-Terrific

E-Energetic

- Press the child's thumb on an ink pad or in a puddle of poster paint. Place the inked thumb on the card, then print "Thumbody loves you."

- Fill in the blanks:

View Comments

"I love you because . . ."

"You are the best mom because . . ."

- List the favorite things Mom and the child enjoy doing together and choose one to enjoy that day. For example, feed the ducks at a nearby lake, go on a bicycle ride, bake brownies, etc.

Note: Older children may wish to dedicate an entire month to Mom with a special idea or note for every day.
