A Millcreek man accused of beating and robbing a neighbor woman kept police at bay for almost four hours Saturday before surrendering peacefully. There were no injuries.

The standoff began when the man barricaded himself in his house at 1201 E. 3745 South - ignoring orders from Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs to come out.Officers initially responded to the scene about 5 a.m. after receiving a call from a woman saying the suspect had assaulted and robbed her at his home, according sheriff's spokesman Rod Norton.

The woman, who police believe was bludgeoned with a club, was taken to an area hospital and later released.

Negotiators and a SWAT team were soon called while deputies evacuated residences from several neighboring homes.

Shortly after 9 a.m., a man feared to be the suspect's hostage, walked unharmed from the single-level home and was questioned.

The suspect emerged about 30 minutes later.
