For what will likely be the last time in Utah history, a candidate was chosen by a coin flip Monday. GOP state Senate candidate Steve Poulton, left, won by calling heads. Dr. Harry Gibbons, former Salt Lake City/County Health Department director, center, lost the coin flip and so is out of the Senate District 9 race. Sen. Delpha Baird, R-Holladay, watches as Salt Lake County Republican Chairman Richard Kuchinsky, right, flips the new Lincoln penny. Poulton, an insurance agent, and Gibbons each received 49 votes in Saturday's county GOP convention. Baird finished first with 54 votes and now faces Poulton in a June 28 primary election. Gibbons promised to help Poulton win the primary. Most political parties will likely go to multiple balloting in 1996, eliminating the possibility of a tie vote.
