A living memorial in the form of a special tree has been established in remembrance of children in the Delta area who have met untimely deaths through the years.
The "Memory Tree," a 10-foot blue spruce, was recently planted near the tennis courts on the Delta City Park. Those who led the project said this type of memorial was chosen because of the excitement children find in decorating a Christmas tree and the memory of playing in trees during childhood.
A temporary tree started the project at Christmas time through the primary efforts of Cathy Walker and Judy Baker. This has now been replaced with a permanent tree.
An important part of the Memory Tree Memorial will be a plaque listing each child's name, parents names and the dates of births and untimely deaths of the children. This is expected to cost upwards of $300, and sponsors encourage donations to a trust fund for that purpose established at Zions Bank in Delta.
Walker and Baker praised officials of Brush Wellman Inc., others who have donated money, city employees and Cecil Losee, Scott Nickle and Bill Lister for their involvement and support of the project.
