It took only one batter for both Scott Erickson and Pat Hentgen to know what to expect.

Erickson, who pitched a no-hitter against Milwaukee in his previous start, was in trouble as soon Darryl Hamilton of the Brewers led off with a single Tuesday night. Erickson and the Minnesota Twins wound up losing 7-6."It was apparent that things were going to be back to usual," Erickson said. "You can't start a new game like it's the 10th inning of the last one."

Hentgen, meanwhile, struck out Kansas City's Vince Coleman to open the game at the SkyDome. He went on to set a team record with 14 strikeouts and pitch a two-hitter as Toronto won 1-0.

"I knew I had good stuff when I was warming up in the bullpen," Hentgen said. "When I got to the mound to start the game I was concentrating on keeping it going."

Hentgen (4-2) needed his best effort to beat Kevin Appier (2-3), who lost despite pitching a three-hitter and striking out 10.

Greg Vaughn, who flied out as the final batter in Erickson's no-hitter, connected for a three-run homer in the first inning at Milwaukee. Vaughn finished with five RBI.
