WAC ready to cut ties with the Aloha Bowl
HONOLULU - The Western Athletic Conference may end its relationship with the Aloha Bowl if officials don't guarantee a berth in the Christmas Day game in Honolulu.
The WAC has had an informal agreement the past two seasons that gave the bowl first option to invite any conference team except the champion, which gets an automatic bid to the Holiday Bowl.
"We want a guarantee," WAC associate commissioner Jeff Hurd said Tuesday. "If you don't have a guarantee, you don't have a contract."
The conference is close to finalizing deals with the Copper and Freedom bowls for guaranteed berths, but Aloha Bowl chief operating officer Lenny Klompus won't make the same guarantee.
"In today's world, there aren't a lot of guarantees," Klompus said. "If the WAC wants to do a similar (no-guarantee) arrangement with us, that would be something we would like to continue."
Klompus said the lack of a deal with the WAC wouldn't preclude Hawaii from playing in the game, since it could invite the school as an at-large team to play the third-place team from the Big Eight.
Utes' Andrus named WAC player of week
University of Utah freshman pitcher Ali Andrus, who hurled Utah into a tie for first place in the WAC standings last weekend, has been named WAC player of the week. Andrus pitched three wins in three days, including a pair over sixth-ranked Fresno State, in Fresno. Andrus, now 23-4, broke school records in wins and shutouts over the weekend.
