A "deadbeat dad" who tried to collect on his late daughter's $350,000 life insurance policy has agreed to give up the claim in exchange for being released from a Rhode Island jail.

James Brindamour had been held at the state's maximum-security prison for the past two months for failing to pay $66,000 in child support for his daughter, Colleen, who died last August at the age of 15.Brindamour, who failed to attend his daughter's funeral, finally returned to Rhode Island from Texas last December after learning that his estranged wife was about to collect on the insurance policy. He claimed he was legally entitled to half the settlement, even though he had allegedly abandoned the family several years ago.

In the meantime, a Family Court judge in Providence ordered Brindamour jailed March 4 until he came up with the $66,000 in back support.
