Rep. Karen Shepherd, D-Utah, joined other women in Congress on Tuesday to support banning 19 assault weapons.

"I join my colleagues in support of the assault weapons ban because of the children killed everyday by guns, and because of the law enforcement officials across this country who are begging for our support," she said."As I have walked door-to-door in my district, I have heard fear in the voices of the parents whose sons and daughters play in neighborhoods where thugs and gang members are better armed than police," she said.

"My constituents - gun owners and non-gun owners alike - support the assault-weapons ban," she said - even though most Utah politicians for years avoided any sort of gun control for fear of retribution from voters.

She said that position will not infringe on the rights of hunters "because these guns are not designed for sport."
