I read in the newspapers that the Utah Department of Transportation proposed a 13-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax increase, which thankfully was rejected by the governor.

Now UDOT is proposing a toll-road fee on certain roads in the state. Specifically, U.S. 6 from Spanish Fork to Helper, U-128, the river road near Moab, and a state highway in west Salt Lake County.A few years ago, we drove around New York and New Jersey, as our oldest son lived in the area at the time. I recall how annoying it was to have to pay a toll every few miles of travel. I thought how lucky I was to live in the wide open spaces of the West.

The thought of toll booths on our road system in Utah raises the hair on the back of my neck. What guarantee do we have that once the door is opened up for three roads to be tolled, more and more roads would not be added?

Utah is one of the top 10 highest-taxed states in the country. Somewhere, somehow, we must all stand up and say enough is enough.
