A. All of the rocks in the world are divided into three basic categories. Igneous rocks were once molten. These include rocks formed from the cooled lava of volcanoes. Igneous rocks are by far the most plentiful. They include granite, quartz, feldspar and mica. They make up about 90 per-cent of the Earth's crust. Sedimentary rocks were made by materials that settle through water or ice. Limestone, sandstone and coal are in this group. These rocks often form an outer layer that covers up igneous rocks underneath. The third type is metamorphic rocks. These are frocks that were in one form, then were reheated and changed their form. Slate, mar-ble and gneiss are in this group.
