John Bobbitt, the man whose penis was severed by his wife last year, was arrested early Friday after a woman described as his fiancee complained to police that Bobbitt had assaulted her.

Police were summoned to the Mountain Creek Apartments about 2:30 a.m., Officer Rick Barela said. Bobbitt was arrested when he returned about 3 a.m., he said.Police are required to hold Bobbitt at least 10 hours on what Barela called the "complaint of domestic violence - battery." He hasn't been formally charged.

The woman's name was not released. Barela identified her as Bobbitt's fiancee. She was not taken to the hospital, he said.

Surgeons reattached Bobbitt's penis after the June 23 maiming.

Lorena Bobbitt was found innocent by reason of insanity by a Virginia jury early this year. Mrs. Bobbitt portrayed herself as a battered wife, saying she endured constant abuse during their four-year marriage. She spent five weeks in a mental hospital.

The 26-year-old Bobbitt was acquitted last year of sexually assaulting his wife and denied ever abusing her.

Their divorce is pending.
