A fire destroyed an unused waterslide and damaged a vacant swimming pool in Taylorsville Friday.

About 6 p.m., firefighters from Salt Lake County and West Jordan fire departments responded to the Rising Star Gymnastics building, 3684 W. 5400 South, to find the old West Side Waterslide and the roof of its swimming pool engulfed in flames. Crews took about 50 minutes to get control the fire. The fire had apparently started in the pool area and burned its way up the winding plastic tube slide, said Salt Lake County Chief Don Berry. A concrete seal prevented the fire from entering the gymnastics building.

Thick black smoke billowed from the burning slide and drifted into the Mulberry Park residential area just north of the slide. Salt Lake County Fire Capt. Lowell Mikolash said one area woman, name and address unavailable, was transported to FHP Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. The cause and damage estimate are yet to be determined.
