Federal retirees who want help with their state income-tax settlements can attend a Utah Tax Commission seminar to get advice.

During the 1994 Legislature, the federal retiree lawsuit was finally settled. U.S. Supreme Court and Utah Supreme Court decisions say federal retirees who paid state income taxes in the late 1980s must get refunds. A political settlement gave the retirees two options - all their money now plus 9 percent interest, or take their refunds over three years on their tax returns and get 12 percent interest. The settlement is estimated to cost Utah taxpayers $58 million with about 20,000 federal retirees entitled to refunds.

To help retirees fill out the proper tax-refund forms, Tax Commission officials will hold the following seminars for federal retirees or their heirs:

- Monday, May 9, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Veterans Administration Hospital, 500 Foothill Blvd., the auditorium in Building 9, Salt Lake City.

- Wednesday, May 11, noon to 1 p.m., Weber County Library, 2464 Jefferson Ave., Ogden.

- Thursday, May 12, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Utah County Commission Chambers, 100 E. Center St., Provo, Room 1400.

- Wednesday, May 18, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Senior Citizen Center auditorium, 245 N. 200 West, St. George.
