Police are attempting to retrace the steps of a West Jordan toddler who escaped his day-care center in South Jordan on Saturday and was found face-down in a canal 1,000 feet away.

Mac Archibald, 3, remained in critical condition Monday. He was found floating in a canal that runs behind A Place to Stay & Play, 10318 S. Redwood Road, after he was reported missing following a routine head count about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

A day-care worker found the boy in the canal behind Quest Sport & Fitness, 10300 S. Redwood Road, South Jordan Police Chief John Parker said. CPR was performed by the day-care owner and a woman who had dropped her children at the fitness center.

Archibald was transported to Holy Cross Jordan Valley Hospital and later to Primary Children's Medical Center.

Investigators believe the boy left through the front of the center and may have been in the icy water for as long as 14 minutes. On Monday, investigators planned to continue a door-to-door investigation of the area to determine the boy's path.

Anyone who may have noticed the boy unattended in the area of the strip mall at 10400 S. Redwood Road between 3 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Saturday should contact South Jordan investigator Kevin Worlton at 254-2180 or 254-4708. Archibald is described as 46 pounds, 44 inches, with blondish/brown hair. He was wearing an orange T-shirt and blue sweatpants without shoes at the time of the incident.
