The Deseret News' Newspaper in Education program won first place in general excellence at a national newspaper conference. The Deseret News was awarded the honor from the Newspaper Association of America Foundation in the 50,000 to 100,000 circulation category.

The Newspaper in Excellence department at the Deseret News uses newspapers in elementary, middle and high schools as learning tools in many subject areas. The Deseret News' NIE program, which has operated for 15 years, works with schools to cultivate future readers of the Deseret News said Sherry Madsen, coordinator in the NIE department.

Madsen said one of their most popular programs with kids and parents is the Young Ideas page, which runs on Tues-days.

"It provides a forum for young ideas that goes past the refrigerator door," Madsen said.

NIE teaches all subjects through the Deseret News, even math. Students can apply their math skills by doubling a recipe, calculating the number of hours between sunrise and sunset, and figuring out what percentage of space is given to advertising.
