George Orwell's "1984" was required reading when I was a student in the '60s. It frightened most students, and everyone hoped that the events outlined would never come to pass. The year 1984 came and life wasn't all that bad - in fact, for our family, life was very good.
However, 1994 is a different story. 1994 smacks of Big Brother. Rep. Karen Shepherd asks for constituents' input, then votes with Big Brother, telling us that it is for our own good. We "little people" do not know what is good or best for us. I may not know what is best all the time but I do know what is good.President Clinton has no idea what is best or good for Utah. Shepherd says she does know what is best, but has there ever been a Clinton-sponsored bill she hasn't voted for?
This election I am voting for Enid Greene Waldholtz. She understands Utah, and her votes would begin to reflect the true definition of a representative.
