Joycelyn Elders can really ruin a party.

The surgeon general unwittingly drove women smokers at the American Medical Association meeting in Chicago out of their haven Tuesday. The cloakroom smokers scattered when Elders repaired to the ladies' room at the hotel to relax and review her speech.

"I didn't even think about it," Elders said, laughing. "I was just sitting down reading."

She has been known to have a chilling effect on smokers.

"I was walking down the street once and I saw two young men, and they said, `There's the surgeon general.' I'm sure they burned themselves," she said. "They took their cigarettes and just squeezed them in their hands."
