H. Duane Smith, former chairman of the department of zoology at Brigham Young University, has been named director of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum.
Smith will assume his new appointment Sept. 1. He replaces longtime director Stanley L. Welsh, who will continue to serve as curator of the museum's herbarium and as a faculty member."Duane Smith is well qualified to become the director of the Bean Museum," said Dean Clayton S. Huber of the College of Biological and Agricultural Sciences. "Since 1985, he has served as secretary-treasurer and a member of the board of directors for the American Society of Mammalogists, a national professional society. As a result of this affiliation, he is familiar with most museums and curators of mammal collections throughout the United States.
