Students quietly work Wednesday in a classroom at the Phefeni Secondary School in Soweto in South Africa, unlike their colleagues of 18 years ago. In 1976, students at the same school marched in protest of being forced to study Afrikaans. The march, in turn, triggered the Soweto uprising on June 16 of that year. Today, a culture of learning is replacing the former culture of resistance.
