Headaches are costing Europe $11.7 billion a year in treatment and absenteeism, the European Headache Federation says.

"Headache is not a noble topic for research," the head of the EHF, Professor Jean Schoenen, told a news conference. "It is not considered serious."Schoenen, a Belgian neurologist, was speaking ahead of a three-day conference aimed at gathering funding for research into headaches.

There are about 90 million sufferers in Europe, nearly one in four people, the EHF, which groups 25 national headache organizations, said in statement.

Headache research is still in its infancy and there are fewer than 80 research and treatment centers in Europe, 13 of which were in Germany, the EHF said.

But despite the existence of these centers there is no research money.
