Special postal cancellations honoring LDS Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. and his brother, Hyrum, will be issued on the 150th anniversary of their martyrdom.
The cancellations include cachet envelopes with drawings of the brothers, titled "Prophet" and "Patriarch" respectively. They will be issued at two locations on June 27, the 150th anniversary of the deaths of the brothers.One cancellation will be issued at the Carthage Jail Station, Ill., and the second will be issued at the Joseph Smith Memorial Station in Salt Lake City.
In addition, a third cancellation with a decorative cachet envelope will be issued in commemoration of the unveiling of the sunstone of the Nauvoo Temple at a ceremony in Nauvoo the same day.
The Joseph and Hyrum cancellations from Carthage and the Joseph Smith Memorial Building are similar but have different ZIP codes. All three of the decorative souvenir envelopes and cancellations will be available at the two stations.
The stamps on the decorative envelopes include the 3-cent "This Is The Place" stamp issued for the Utah Centennial, 1847-1947.
The Joseph Smith cancellations will be available from Carthage Postmistress Jennifer Whalen, USPS Carthage, IL 62321-9998; or Postmaster Scott Norris, 230 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84101-9998. The sunstone cancellation will be available from Nauvoo Postmaster Ray Jones, USPS Nauvoo, IL 62354-9998.
The drawing was made by Salt Lake artist Joyce Stinnet of the Valley View 4th Ward, and arrangements for the cancellations were made by Alan Wood and Lloyd Shaw of Commemorative Design, P.O. Box 271332, Salt Lake City, UT 84127-1332. Each cachet is available through them for $2 each or all three for $5.
