Steve Rice blasted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning, leading Viewmont past Cyprus 9-4 in American Legion play at the West Jordan Invitational.
Viewmont led the entire game after Jeremy Layton hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to score Sky Grant.The Vikings broke the game open in the fourth when Cyprus committed four errors. The five-run explosion was topped by a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that Craig Peterson laid down to score Jon Layton.
Cyprus scored four runs in a two-out rally to bring the score closer at 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Spike Nash and Clint Dilley both hit doubles in the inning.
The Vikings got two insurance runs in the top of the fifth when Rice knocked his two-run homer.
Cyprus had an excellent chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and no outs. Viewmont's Chad Kawa came in relief for Shae Cook and shut down the Pirates without scoring any runs.
"I just wanted to throw strikes and keep the ball down," Kawa said. "I fell in a pretty good groove."
Cook was the winning pitcher and hit 3-4 with one RBI. Rice also went 3-4 with two RBI.
Bingham 9, Skyline 8
Burke Nelson hit a home run, going 2-3 with two RBI. Nelson was also the winning pitcher for Bingham.
Viewmont 7, Bingham 2
Craig Peterson led the Vikings past the Miners with three hits and one RBI. Shae Cook had a two-run scoring double. Eric Hancock went the distance on the mound for Viewmont.
West Jordan 11, Kearns 10
The host team West Jordan outlasted the Cougars in this slugfest.
