SHARE `LION KING’ SETS OPENING DAY RECORDS IN N.Y. AND L.A.

Walt Disney Co. said Thursday its animated musical "The Lion King" sold more than $305,000 in tickets at the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles and Radio City Music Hall in New York in its first day, setting opening day records at both locations.

The New York theater drew more than 11,000 moviegoers to gross $262, 217 while the El Capitan total was $43,435. All screenings included a live stage show.Disney said it has sold out all 22 shows in Los Angeles through Sunday and eight shows after that. It also has already sold out several upcoming shows at Radio City.

Advance ticket sales in New York have hit $2.6 million for the film, which will go into national release on June 24.
