The Khmer Rouge attack a section of Phnom Penh - resulting in the most savage action against the city since the beginning of the war. One hundred forty people are killed, 200 are wounded and 10,000 are left homeless.

President Richard M. Nixon resigns.

U.S. Congress appropriates $7 million for the defense of South Vietnam.

January

North Vietnamese troops begin siege of Phoc Long provincial capital.

March 31

City of Da Nang falls to Communist forces.

April

Saigon is renamed Ho Chi Minh City following the North Vietnamese takeover.

April 30

South Vietnam surrenders; Vietnam War ends.
