Can you imagine going 13 years without missing a day at school?
Michael Westover doesn't have to - he did it.The West High School senior has gone from kindergarten through this year never missing - or skipping - a single day of school.
Although he's proud of the accomplishment, Westover admits it came with a price.
"I got sick on my holidays - every single one of them," he said, laughing.
He can laugh now, but it wasn't so funny when he got measles during Christmas break when he was in elementary school.
A football player and wrestler, Westover also has had his share of minor sports injuries, but "I walk through them."
As for school days when he doesn't feel so hot, he just slogs through anyhow.
Westover admits he has been a little drowsy in class a few times, such as the Monday when he returned at dawn from a choir trip to San Francisco and went to school anyway. But mostly it's just a matter of carrying on, he said. His mother, Vicki Dolato, is proud of his attendance record, as are grandparents Pauline and Robert Bailey and great-grandmother Elizabeth Smith.
Westover received a certificate for excellent attendance from Assistant Principal Gene Bonella, who observed, "There are people who make excuses for everything under the sun. You know what this is called? Responsibility."
Bonella said such a track record spoke well of Westover and would certainly impress future employers.
