MASSACHUSETTS LOSING GROUND ECONOMICALLY

A new report says Massachusetts' once high-flying economy has lost ground to other states in more than a dozen key industries.

In what it termed "a wake-up call," the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation said the state suffers from an unfriendly business climate and higher-than-average costs that are driving manufacturing jobs to other states."These are sobering conclusions, but by no means is the sky falling, " said Michael Widmer, president of the foundation, which is largely funded by corporations.

The report said Massachusetts lost market share in 18 of 21 key industries over an eight-year period, including electronics and computer manufacturing, once the heart of the state's economy.

Massachusetts outpaced the rest of the country in only three areas: money management, drugs and computer software, it said.
