In response to an article decrying the use of ephedrine-containing herbs (Deseret News, June 7), herbs like those mentioned in the article have literally saved my life. Only two years ago, I was 90 pounds overweight with dangerously high levels of blood fat and cholesterol. Today, I enjoy being thin and feeling great.
I am acquainted with a number of other individuals who have experienced similar success. The concern over the abuse of ephedra may be justified, but certainly my own story and those of others like me also constitute evidence that cannot be ignored. In all the news reports I have heard involving the danger of ephedrine, it seems the common thread is the consumption of massive doses that defy good judgment. Very often, these massive doses are taken by teenagers who deliberately seek to get "high."
As a result of these incidents, an attempt has been made to regulate the distribution of ephedrine-containing herbs, although the only real and present danger is human stupidity.
