An early morning accident in Parleys Canyon Monday claimed the lives of two people when a semitrailer truck rear-ended and crushed their car.
The 1978 Plymouth had stopped in the right traveling lane, apparently because of a flat tire, when the rig smashed into it at 12:14 a.m. On Tuesday, the Utah Highway Patrol had not released the names of those involved, pending notification of kin.The semi driver later told UHP officers he had abruptly come upon the car and tried to stop but couldn't before pushing the vehicle 800 feet on westbound I-80 near Mountain Dell Golf Course.
Of the four males in the car, the rear left passenger and the driver died and the right front-seat passenger jumped out and escaped with minor injuries. The right rear-seat passenger was trapped for more than 11/2 hours until he was extricated. The man was taken to University Hospital.
The truck driver and witnesses told investigators the car did not have its lights on when the semi hit, said UHP Trooper Steven Win-ward.
Winward said the truck driver was the only one wearing a seat belt.
