Harry Winston, the eminent Fifth Avenue jeweler, labeled actress Sharon Stone an ingrate Friday for accepting the loan of a diamond necklace for a publicity event and then refusing to return it because she considered it a gift.

Ronald Winston, president of the firm and son of its founder, described Stone's claim as "mind-boggling." "We're hardly in business to give away jewelry, especially a $500,000 necklace, simply to promote our collection!" Winston said. The necklace in question was loaned to her for public appearances promoting her latest film, "Sliver." When the firm asked that the necklace be returned, "intermediaries told us that she believed it was a gift," Winston said, adding only a threat of legal action resulted in a return.

On June 2, Stone filed a $12 million suit in Los Angeles Superior Court against Harry Winston, charging the firm with misrepresentation and breach of contract. "Never has the firm encountered a situation such as this before," Winston commented. "All I can tell you is, she's no longer invited to the party."
