Approximately 400 Utah Power customers here were without electricity Thursday for almost eights hours after a squirrel caused a transformer to fail at the Fruit Heights substation.

According to Dennis Boyer, Layton District Operations Manager for Utah Power, at about 1 p.m., a squirrel climbed onto a transformer and caused it to arc and burn. He said 600 customers immediately lost power - including some 200 in Layton - but their power was restored in about one hour.Boyer said a portable transformer had to be secured from Salt Lake City in order to restore the power to Fruit Heights by 8:40 p.m.
