Sargent LaMar Rice, 73, passed away June 22, 1994, from a stroke following surgery. He was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada to Hannah Priscilla Parkinson and David Augustus Rice, the last of seven children. He was raised in Brigham City and attended BYU. He married Priscilla Gudmundson of Springville, Utah in the Salt Lake LDS Temple September 4, 1942.
He served in the Coast Guard three years, after which they moved to California where in 1952, Priscilla passed away leaving him with two daughters.He married Shirley Schulthess Bowen in 1955 and adopted her son, James Bowen. Three daughters were born to them. They lived in La Canada, California from 1959 until 1986, when they moved to Summit Park, Utah. In 1991, they moved to South Jordan. He is preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and his stepson, James Bowen Rice.
Survived by his wife, Shirley; and his five daughters, Kathleen Taylor (John), Maryl Lee (Dewaine), Melissa Means (Bryan), Rebecca Crane (Marshall), Rosalind Fretz (Albert); 27 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 25, at the Parkway 4th Ward chapel, 9800 Dunsinane (3825 West), South Jordan. Family will receive visitors at Lake Hills Mortuary, 10055 South State Street, Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. or one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
