Mike Ditka underwent an angioplasty to clear a blocked artery near his heart today and was doing fine, a doctor said.

"He'll be discharged fairly soon," said Dr. Jay Alexander at Luthern General Hospital, who performed the angioplasty.The former Chicago Bears coach was transferred to the hospital today from Lake Forest Hospital, three days after suffering chest pains while he was exercising.

Alexander said "very minor blockage" was cleared.

Ditka, 54, suffered a mild heart attack in the middle of the 1988 season but recovered to take the Bears to a 12-4 league-best record and the NFC title game. Ditka led the Bears to their first and only Super Bowl victory in 1986. He was fired as Bears coach in January 1993.
