Gusty winds and 100-degree heat fueled wildfires that burned out of control Saturday, destroying 10 homes and threatening at least 100 more.
A fast-moving brush fire blackened 1,000 acres of high desert scrub at the edge of the Angeles National Forest. It destroyed nine houses and a mobile home, and threatened about 100 homes and ranches near the community of Pinon Hills. Damage was estimated at $2 million.Another 500-acre fire burned out of control in the Soledad Canyon area of the Angeles National Forest, but homes were threatened.
Meanwhile, a 850-acre blaze threatened mobile homes and million-dollar horse ranches south of Anza in Riverside County.
No injuries were reported by late Saturday.
About 70 homes near the Angeles National Forest blaze were ordered evacuated. An undetermined number of homes were evacuated near the Anza fire.
Winds in Southern California gusted up to 20 mph Saturday and temperatures rose to 109 degrees.
Some 600 firefighters battled the blazes in the national forest, aided by six bulldozers, four helicopters that dropped water and eight airplanes that dumped fire retardant.
The larger fire was in an area of mostly brush and no trees about 25 miles northeast of the city of San Bernardino.
