Veteran political candidate Craig Oliver and newcomer Bill Rigley face each other Tuesday in an Independent Party of Utah U.S. Senate race.

Oliver has run for a number of offices; in 1986 he was the Democrat's candidate against then-Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah. Rigley has not sought office before.Oliver said he left the Democratic Party several years ago because both the major parties - Republican and Democratic - are more interested in criticizing and harming each other than in serving the people.

Rigley said he decided to run for the Senate because for years he waited for anyone - "in either major party" - to step forward and speak out against government growth and waste.
