Garfield County has its first traffic signal light. But it's far distant from any community.

The signal is only temporary, however. It was erected at the site of a one-lane bridge being replaced near Calf Creek between Boulder and Escalante.Officials said the light was installed for increased safety along scenic U-12 and for those who travel to the Calf Creek Recreation Area. The area is becoming increasingly popular with recreationists.

Visitor parking is not allowed at the bridge during the construction but will be improved and opened for future use as part of the project.

More than 122,000 pounds of structural steel and 300 cubic yards of concrete will be used on the project, according to Utah Department of Transportation personnel.
