The Salt Lake County sheriff's office and surveyor's office hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday to show off the county's new upgraded communications system.

The sheriff's office has been using the new system since May. The county Fire Department will implement the upgrading of its system later this year and other county offices will join in 1995. The surveyor, public works, health department, Hansen Planetarium, Parks and Recreation, Fine Arts and other county offices will join the upgraded system. The sheriff's office had been using the same radio system since the early 1970s with two primary radio sites - at the south pits of Kennecott and on Ensign Peak behind the state Capitol.

New, more effective tower sites have been constructed in Carrigan Canyon, Kennecott Ridge and Boy Scout Ridge.

The new system samples all the sites and instantly picks the one with the best signal strength and places the conversation through it. Dispatchers will also be able to tell who a deputy is when they use their radios.
