A 35-year-old Layton man was critically injured Tuesday in a head-on collision on U.S. 89.
The unidentified man was driving a Honda Accord north about 10:20 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, he swerved across the lanes of traffic near the entrance to Mountain Road and collided with a one-ton flatbed truck, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Graviet. The truck, used for landscaping, clipped the right front portion of the car, nearly severing it. A helicopter transported the driver of the car to University Hospital with head injuries and internal bleeding.
Scott Wright, 30, South Ogden, who was driving the truck, was treated for minor injuries at McKay-Dee Hospital, then released.
Fruit Heights Mayor Rich Harvey, who heard the collision from his nearby home, said the city planned this week to meet with the UHP to discuss the hazards of the highway.
