SHARE HOUSE HEARINGS ON WHITEWATER SET TO START JULY 26

House hearings on the Whitewater affair are scheduled to start July 26, focusing initially on the removal of files from a White House lawyer's office soon after his death.

Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez, chairman of the House Banking Committee, announced Monday that special counsel Robert B. Fiske Jr., top aides to President Clinton and federal banking regulators were invited to testify.After the opening hearing on removal of files from the office of Vincent Foster, the inquiry will shift to contacts between administration officials and federal banking regulators.

White House counsel Lloyd N. Cutler quickly pledged administration cooperation.

The Senate will begin similar hearings no later than July 29. Senate Republicans have tried to broaden the subject matter, but Democrats have insisted on a narrow focus.
