Hats off to John Preston Creer in his efforts to make illogic appear logical (Forum, May 24).

I'm no gun-totin', dear-killin' stud of a hunter, but it is plain to me that if the Congress can make exceptions to what is considered a constitutional guarantee not only to keep but use a knife, sword, revolver or Uzi, then my right to self-defense is in peril. Either the right to bear arms is guaranteed or it is not. In the case of assault weapons, it is not.It seems to me Creer takes the nonaggressive silent types out here for soft-headed whatzits. How long before Clinton and his crowd go after "Saturday night specials" and long guns? After all, they can hurt people. You can bet they aren't satisfied just with the ban on assault weapons.

The gun lobby, of which I am not, keeps reminding us correctly that the issue is not guns. It is who has them. The bad guys always have them. After all, how many zip guns gave been crafted in prison? Clinton and Creer insist that if you take them from the good guys, the bad guys won't get them. Some logic.
