On my daughter's last day of second grade, I received a letter from the Davis County School District that her bus service would be discontinued. Reasons cited were lack of state funding, guidelines regarding set distances from the school and denial of "hazardous route" status.
We live in West Kaysville, almost one and a half miles from Kaysville Elementary, which is located on the east side of the freeway. Our children are now expected to walk up 200 North (some of which does not have sidewalks), across three sets of railroad tracks, across an 1-15 on-ramp, and across an 1-15 off-ramp. Apparently this is not considered "hazardous."A 16-year-old boy was recently struck by a car near this railroad crossing and killed. While this boy was not en route to or from school, this is a tragedy that should serve to warn our school and government officials of the dangers of this route.
Will a child have to die before a bus route is again established? Of what worth is a child's life? One might ask oneself these questions in a year when the state has had a surplus of funds and when the school district has made this decision due to "lack" of funds.
