Fourteen teams, including the United States, have advanced to the second round of the World Cup, leaving two berths open.

Those spots will go to the second-place team from Group D, which finishes Thursday night, and either Russia or the third-place finisher from Group D.In Group D, Argentina, in first place and already through to the next round, plays Bulgaria at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Nigeria takes on Greece at Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts.

A victory or tie by Argentina sends it back to Foxboro to play either Belgium or Italy in the second round. Should Nigeria beat or tie Greece - which lost both its games 4-0 and has been the weakest team in the tournament, it will advance. If Bulgaria does not lose to Argentina, it also will move on.

That would shut out Russia, which was third in Group B with three points. The Russians would make the second round only if either Nigeria or Bulgaria loses - and Nigeria has to lose by more than one goal or lose by one goal but not score three goals or more.

Brazil won Group B and plays the United States, third in Group A, at Stanford, Calif., on Monday. Sweden was second in Group B and plays Saudi Arabia, the runner-up in Group F, at Dallas on Sunday.

The Netherlands, which won Group F, takes on Ireland, second in Group E, at Orlando, Fla., on Monday. Romania, tops in Group A, will be at Pasadena, Calif., on Sunday, against either Italy or the third-place team from Group D.

Defending champion Germany won Group C and faces either Belgium or Russia on Saturday at Chicago. The other game Saturday has Switzerland against Spain.

The Group D winner plays Tuesday at Foxboro against either Italy or Belgium. The runner-up in Group D plays Tuesday at East Rutherford, N.J., against Mexico, which was first in Group A.

No games can finish in ties after the first round. If the score is tied through regulation, two full 15-minute extra periods are played. If the tie is not broken after the overtimes, a penalty kick shootout is staged.
