Japan has issued a new set of four stamps honoring the 1994 World Figure Skating Championships held in Chiba City.
The new stamps come in setenent (attached) pairs. One 50-yen stamp depicts a female skater while the other 50 yen shows an ice-dancing duo. One 80 yen features a male skater and the other 80 yen illustrates an ice-skating couple. Previous World Figure Skating Championships were held in Tokyo in 1977 and 1985.It is interesting to note that the wording on the stamps is in Japanese and English.
Also issued in Japan was a single stamp commemorating Philately Week. The 80-yen stamp depicts a painting by Fukuda titled "Irises," which features a beautiful flower. Four other stamps are dedicated to the 1994 International Year of the Family established by the United Nations General Assembly. The designs were the result of stamp design competitions in that country.
All nine stamps, mint, are available for $15.95 from the Far East Collectors Society, P.O. Box 4293, Valley Village, CA 91617; Phone 1-818-997-6496. The society also is offering 100 different Japanese commemorative stamps mounted on black display cards for $9.95.
