The Utah State Bar has filed a complaint against Salt Lake attorney L. Charles Spafford, who's been accused of keeping money from a wrongful death settlement that belonged to a client.
Spafford settled the wrongful death suit in April 1993 for $20,000. Spafford deposited the entire check in his account, the complaint says. Spafford kept nearly $7,000 as his fee and promised to send the client a check for $13,277.But the check bounced each time the client tried to cash it. Spafford gave the client $2,000 a month after the case had settled. However, he did not pay the remaining $11,277 until after the client had complained to the bar.
Spafford will get a hearing before 3rd District Judge Richard H. Moffat.
