An inmate serving time for sexual abuse of a child died Thursday night at the Utah State Prison.

Merrill Bruce Mackay, 42, went to the prison infirmary and complained that he was not feeling well. He then went into diabetic shock, and prison officials called for a helicopter to take him to the hospital, said prison spokesman Jack Ford.Mackay, however, died about 11 p.m., before the helicopter arrived. "They think it might be heart failure at this point, but they're doing an autopsy," Ford said.

Mackay had been in prison since June 1988.
