A 16-year-old student has been arrested after a smoke grenade was released in Nampa's South Junior High School.

Nampa Police Detective Tim Randall said the boy was arrested at school on Wednesday and accused of malicious injury to property and battery. The battery charge was the result of 22 people being sent home for smoke inhalation after the grenade went off last Friday, Randall said. The boy's name was not released because he is a juvenile. His arrest came after police interviewed students at the junior high.

Randall said the youth told him he detonated the grenade as a prank. He faces possible penalties ranging from probation to detention to restitution for damages and medical bills.
